The Southampton Research Software Group (SRSG) is looking to recruit two Research Software Engineers (RSEs) to join our excellent team at the University of Southampton.

The SRSG was one of the first CSR groups set up in the UK. It is the basis of campaign operations that has made research software genius recognized around the world. As such, the SRSG can offer not only a range of exciting projects within the University of Southampton, but also the perfect opportunity to get involved in the wider CSR community. We plan to grow significantly over the next few years to meet the demand for the University’s CSR expertise, so we also provide the opportunity for the new hire to advance their career as the SRSG grows. You will have the opportunity to work with the Software Sustainability Institute which is co-located with the SRSG. The Institute is the world authority on research software. It plays a key role in helping the research community recognize the role of software in research and adopt practices that lead to reliable and repeatable research.

To be successful you must have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications or experience and a solid background in development practices and excellent communication skills. A talent for solving technical problems is essential. You will be in contact with a wide range of technologies and have many opportunities to develop new skills. We don’t expect you to master everything, but it is essential that you enjoy learning new technologies.

We particularly welcome applications from under-represented groups in the academic and CSR communities.

You will make a valuable contribution to the work of the SRSG, from software development to training. There will be plenty of opportunities to develop skills that will advance your career by learning leading CSR and developing skills outside of software development, such as project management and consulting.

The position will initially be a one-year fixed-term contract, but is expected to continue for much longer depending on funding. The post is based at the University of Southampton in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
