The University of Southampton has a long-standing commitment to high performance computing (HPC) as a strategic enabler of research. The university’s main HPC system, Iridis, is currently in its fifth generation and is one of the largest computing installations in the UK. We are currently launching a 5-year investment plan to refresh our on-premises clusters and study HPC cloud. To ensure efficient use of our computing resources, the Southampton Research Software Group (SRSG) is looking for four HPC Research Software Engineers (RSE) to join our excellent team at the University of Southampton.
The SRSG was one of the first CSR groups set up in the UK, and it is the base of operations for the campaign that has helped recognize research software engineering across the world. As such, the SRSG can offer both a range of exciting projects within the University of Southampton and unparalleled opportunities to engage with the national and international CSR community. We will experience significant growth over the next few years to meet the demand for our expertise, which provides the opportunity for a new recruit to advance their career as the SRSG grows. You will also have the opportunity to work with the Software Sustainability Institute, which is co-located with the SRSG. The Institute is the world’s leading authority on research software. He plays a key role in helping the research community recognize the role of software in research and adopt practices that lead to reliable and reproducible research.
To pass, you may have a PhD or equivalent experience, as well as a strong background in development practices and good communication skills. A talent for solving technical problems is essential. You will come into contact with a wide range of technologies and have many opportunities to learn new skills. We do not expect you to master everything, but it is essential that you enjoy learning new technologies.
We particularly welcome applications from underrepresented groups in the academic, HPC, and CSR communities.
You will make a valuable contribution to the work of the SRSG, from software development to training. There will be plenty of opportunities to develop skills that will advance your career by learning from key CSRs and developing skills outside of software development, such as project management and consulting.
The position will be a two-year fixed-term contract initially, but is expected to continue for much longer depending on funding. The position is based at the University of Southampton in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
We promote a healthy work-life balance through generous vacation pay (30+ days), flexible hours and flexible work options including part-time, hybrid on-site/remote work, access to on-site daycare and our comprehensive benefits package also includes a contributory pension plan, subsidized health and fitness facilities, a work-to-bike program and a range of discounts.
