Software Engineer / Developer – Equipment, Technology and Innovation Job with HR Wallingford Ltd


We are looking for a Software Engineer / Developer who can demonstrate skills in Research Software Development.

As a water consulting company, we build and test scale models to help us explore developments in coastal and marine environments and our facilities are among the largest in the world. To support this work, we develop specialized equipment, software and instruments for our engineers and scientists, and we also supply them to other facilities around the world.

Our Equipment, Technology and Innovation (ET&I) group – a multidisciplinary team of mechanical, electrical and software engineers – is focused on the development and supply of this equipment.

About the role

Innovation and customer orientation are the keys to our success. As an Engineer in the Control Systems team (which is part of the ET&I group), you will support software development projects and manage them at all stages of the project lifecycle, including the development of specifications and design solutions, code generation, validation and product support (both face-to-face and via remote assistive technologies).

About you

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Technically curious: you will enjoy innovating and proposing new solutions.
  • Getting started: you will help validate the software solutions within our modeling facilities.
  • A great communicator: You will help establish technical roadmaps and collect feedback.
  • Soft: you will be able to work on several projects.

We would also like to see:

  • Software development experience: you will have two years of experience in delivering software.
  • A university degree: preferably in an engineering or software development discipline, or in a computer science discipline.
  • A mathematical mind: our software is based on complex mathematical concepts and algorithms.
  • Language skills: excellent spoken and written English. Also, as we work all over the world, other languages ​​would be welcome.

Although not essential, experience in the following technical fields would be a real plus:

  • HMI or UX development
  • Ethernet networks
  • Real-time systems or Industry 4.0 technologies, such as OPC-UA and / or MQTT
