New comic book writer Star Trek Lower Decks idw comic, Ryan North, tweeted the confirmation. “I saw someone surprised that we named a ship the ‘USS Lovelace’ in STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS #1 (available now at a comic book store near you!). I want to assure them that it is named after Ada Lovelace – the world’s first computer programmer – and not, as they assumed, the star of Deep Throat (1972)”
That would have been Linda Lovelace sure. Ada Lovelace work with Charles Babbage and created the world’s first software for its analytical engine. Famously, she was the first to realize applications beyond computation and published the first algorithm intended to be performed in this way, earning her the distinction of being the world’s first female computer programmer. Linda Lovelace… no. Ada Lovelace has yet to appear on Star Trek, although she has appeared in Doctor Who Few years ago. Thus, the name of a ship should do the trick.
Ryan North continued “I think there is a shortage of ships named after IRL IT people (especially women!) in Star Trek and I wanted to increase the number a bit. But on reflection, author’s intent only gets you so far, and who am *I* to say after what *your* Starfleet names ships?? IDIC, baby”
What about Kieron Gillen? He tweeted his own response, “I find your explanation hard to swallow.” Because of course he did.
