Stripe acquires Kickoff (and a three-way high-end software design team)

Bandaged, the mobile payment platform for developers, has just announced the acquisition of a three-way application To start up.

Kickoff is a desktop Mac app for group chatting and task management for teams. The Apple-tasting product looks and feels right at home on Mac devices, but its features pretty much duplicate what Stripe already offers.

But the service itself isn’t really the point. As application designer and member of the Kickoff team Benjamin De Cock wrote today on his personal blog he had been working freelance for Stripe for some time.

“As my experience with Stripe evolved, we discussed ways to work together and ultimately decided that it made sense for Stripe to acquire Kickoff,” he continued.

Another reason it made sense is Stripe’s beautiful silver vault a la Scrooge McDuck. The company took $ 18 million around the same time last year and doubled with an additional $ 20 million in July. At this point, we’re pretty sure they’re using gold bricks as doorstops.

So what does an API company do with a team of product designers? We’ll just have to keep an eye on the company’s deployments for the rest of the year to find out.
